What is it?

 

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that is found in the protective lining (mesothelium) of the lungs, heart and abdomen. Cancer cells can also spread from their original site to other parts of the body.

 

Most cases of mesothelioma begin in the pleura (lining of the lungs and chest) or peritoneum (stomach lining). Although malignant mesothelioma is a relatively rare form of cancer, instances of the disease have been on the rise in the last 20 years. Approximately 2,000 to 3,000 new cases of malignant mesothelioma are diagnosed each year in the United States alone.
