Pleural Mesothelioma affects the pleura, the serous membrane lining the lungs.

Pleural mesothelioma is the most common type of malignant mesothelioma, accounting for approximately 75% of all cases.

The only known cause for pleural mesothelioma in the United States is prior exposure to asbestos.  Often, symptoms relating to pleural mesothelioma will not manifest until decades after the asbestos exposure has taken place.

The most common presenting symptoms of pleural mesothelioma are shortness of breath and chest pain. Pleural mesothelioma symptoms mimic those of a number of other lung conditions and diseases, including asthma, bronchitis, influenza, and pneumonia.  As a result, it is often misdiagnosed as one of these less threatening conditions.
