Peritoneal mesothelioma is the second most common type of malignant mesothelioma, accounting for 10 to 20 percent of all cases.
When a patient develops mesothelioma in the abdominal cavity, the peritoneum becomes inflamed and thickens. This causes the buildup of excess fluid in the patient’s abdomen and leads to abdominal swelling and discomfort, one of the major symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma.
As with pleural mesothelioma, these symptoms are often found in other common ailments, such as appendicitis, gastrointestinal problems, liver disease and pancreatitis, causing this disease to be frequently misdiagnosed. The physical symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma are typically connected with abdominal pain and may include:
• Abdominal swelling or pain
• Weight loss
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Fatigue
• Fever
• Bowel obstruction
