Pleural mesothelioma is the most common type of malignant mesothelioma, accounting for approximately 75% of all cases. Pleural mesothelioma affects the pleura, the serous membrane lining the lungs. Often, patients with pleural mesothelioma will develop pleural thickening and in many instances the patient’s pleura will become fibrous and harden. This will constrict the patient’s lung movement and make breathing more difficult. Another common occurrence is the development of pleural effusion, which is the buildup of excess fluid in the area of the lungs. The fluid buildup creates added pressure on the lungs as well as the chest cavity. As such, patients with pleural mesothelioma will commonly experience a diminished lung capacity and difficulty breathing. The physical symptoms that may impact a patient include:
• Shortness of breath
• Persistent, dry cough
• Difficulty breathing
• Chest pain
• Weight loss
• Sleep loss
• Fatigue
• Difficulty in swallowing
• Lumps on chest
• Sweating or fever
