The primary cause of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos.  Due to the long latency period for this disease, patients with mesothelioma typically do not demonstrate symptoms until 20-50 years after their initial exposure to asbestos.  Many symptoms of mesothelioma are similar to ones associated with more common, less threatening diseases, such as bronchitis, asthma, influenza or pneumonia, which can often make diagnosis of this rare cancer difficult.  Once a mesothelioma patient begins to experience symptoms, the cancer progresses quickly, making an accurate diagnosis that much more important.
