The primary cause of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos.
A history of working with or around asbestos or asbestos-containing products is considered a major risk factor in the development of mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma symptoms often do not manifest until 20-50 years after the exposure to asbestos has occurred.
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral made up of masses of strong, flexible fibers that are durable and heat-resistant. Due to the fibers’ favorable physical capabilities, asbestos has been widely used in many industrial products, including cement, brake linings, drywall, flooring products, insulation and many others.
When working with or manipulating these products, tiny asbestos fibers may be released into the air, allowing them to be inhaled or swallowed, and can cause serious health problems. In addition to mesothelioma, exposure to asbestos increases the risk of lung cancer, asbestosis (a noncancerous, chronic lung ailment), and other cancers.
