CALIFORNIA REGENTS APPROVE $10.6 MILLION SETTLEMENT IN GENDER DISCRIMINATION -- "A victory for equal opportunity"

:

The Regents of the University of California (the "Regents") voted to approve a settlement agreement that would resolve an equal opportunity class action lawsuit charging that thousands of female employees were denied equal pay and promotional opportunity at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. "The proposed settlement is a victory for female employees at one of America's top laboratories and for everyone who cares about equal opportunity in the workplace," said James Sturdevant of the Sturdevant Law Firm.  "The Lab’s recognition that equal work deserves equal pay and promotional opportunity is long overdue." said TLPJ Staff Attorney Victoria Ni, co-counsel in the case.  "The women in this case who fought so long for equal opportunity are real heroes to us all," said The TLPJ Foundation’s President Gary Gwilliam.

LANDMARK SETTLEMENT FOR EQUAL OPPORTUNITY REACHED IN NATIONWIDE CLASS ACTION BY DEAF WORKERS AGAINST UNITED PARCEL SERVICE

This is the first such equal opportunity employment class action brought on behalf of deaf workers throughout the country concerning equal opportunity.  Under this settlement, UPS has agreed to a comprehensive accommodations program to be implemented throughout the country to ensure equal opportunity.  This accommodations program is designed to ensure that deaf applicants and employees have full access to workplace information, same workplace conditions and opportunity for promotion, and basic workplace safety. Named plaintiff Bert Enos noted: “This has been a hard-fought battle to get UPS to recognize that deaf people have the right to equal treatment and opportunity." Caroline Jacobs, of Disability Rights Advocates, commented: “We hope that this settlement sends a message...that employees with disabilities are entitled to the same rights and opportunity as other employees in the workplace.”
